A truly wonderous place that is sadly endangered
The Calakmul Biosphere reserve is classified a critically threatened destination, this means that immediate measures are needed in order to ensure the conservation and the protection of its biodiversity.
What Makes The Calakmul Biosphere So Mysterious?
One of the reasons why this place is so mysterious, is because of the astonishing fact that 86 species of animals have made their home here. Out of these 86 species, the Official Registry of Mexican Ecology, lists 18 of them. The Official Registry of Mexican Ecology is an extremely important resource, as it outlines all the fauna and flora that are under protection, very rare, threatened in some way or the other or are in danger of becoming extinct. The Calakmul Biosphere is also home to 5 out of the 6 big cats that are native to the wild life of Mexico and these include the likes of pumas, jaguarondis, margays, ocelots and jaguars. Included in the fauna found in the Calakmul Biosphere are crested guans, Baird's tapir, ocellated turkeys, Geoffroy's spider monkeys, toucans, Central American agoutis, green parrots, Guatemalan black howlers and white-nosed coatis.
What Are The Effects Of Global Warming And Carbon Offsets On The Calakmul Biosphere?
Established in 1989, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, is one of the biggest and most highly protected areas in Mexico. But, even though it is well protected, things like global warming and carbon offsets, have started to take its toll on this reserve. As such, in order to protect the Calakmul Biosphere, the environmental authorities of Mexico, are working hard and fast on adaptation plans, to help protect and preserve this reserve. The environmental authorities of Mexico have identified 29 adaptation strategies, that have been given top priority. It is believed that these will help greatly to deal with such things like global warming and carbon offsets and various other climatic changes, that pose a threat to the Calakmul Biosphere.

Calakmul Biosphere is a pristine environment, with a vast natural habitat. Eco-tourism is extremely beneficial to the Calakmul Biosphere, as it helps in protecting such types of places. In 1989, Carlos Salinas de Gortari (Mexican economist), declared the Calakmul Biosphere to be a 'biosphere reserve’. Reasons for this were the protection of the many ancient Mayan ruins in the area, as well as the preservation of the biological diversity of this region. There can be no doubt that eco-tourism would be extremely beneficial to the Calakmul Biosphere. This is because eco-tourism allows communities and countries, to continue to progress, by building their economies- without endangering their environment. This means that the wildlife of Calakmul Biosphere can continue to thrive — while the economy of the country can keep growing.
What Is The Connection Between Calakmul Biosphere And Wildlife Research?
When considering the preservation and protection of the Calakmul Biosphere, perhaps it would be very wise to consider wildlife research, as an alternative to environmental education. It is extremely important that communities that are local to the Calakmul Biosphere, including school children, learn what is required to preserve and protect this 'critically threatened designation'. For it is only when these local communities begin to learn, will they begin to understand the value of the Calakmul Biosphere and the importance of protecting it.
